Kissimmee is a city in Polk County, Florida, United States. The population was 27,564 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Orlando–Kissimmee–St Petersburg Metropolitan Statistical Area. The name "Kissimmee" comes from the Miami-Key Largo Agreement of 1907 which named two communities in that area - Kissimmee and Lakeland - after Key Largo, Florida. The first time the towns were referred to as such was on October 15, 1907 when Pompano Beach Mayor W.D. Hanks sent a letter to the editor of "The Palm Beach Post" stating that he had been told by developers who were moving into those areas that they needed to find a name for their new community so that potential customers would know where they were located and what type of development it represented. After much discussion among town officials and newspaper editors, they decided upon Kissimmee as a possible name for their new community due to its similarity to both Lakeland (which was then known as Cudjoe) and Key Largo (then called Belle Isle). In 1948, Kissimmee became an incorporated municipality with 3 precincts totaling 22 residents which limited growth until annexation by Sanford in 1960 increased population to 453 residents within 2 years timeframe In 1970-71 county annexations increased population size again reaching 517 residents within 2 yrs timeframe making Kissimmee one of Floridas fastest growing cities during this period When Orange County was created in 1974 it annexed portions of Polk County including parts of Kissimmee adding an additional 20,000 people over the next few years creating what is now known as the Orlando–Kissimmee–St Petersburg Metropolitan Statistical Area In 2000-2001 following Hurricane Floyd there was significant growth with annexation by Osceola allowing for a total population of 29,812 within 10 years timeframe making KISSIMMEE one of Floridas fastest growing cities ever

Kissimmee is a city in Polk County, Florida, United States. The population was 54,898 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Miami–Ft. Lauderdale–Boca Raton Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first permanent settler in Kissimmee was James Burt in 1883. Businesses were founded here soon after and on January 2, 1907, the first word ofllers game was played in town when two men from St Petersburg came to challenge an existing game being played by two friends named Tom and Jerry. At that time there were no hotels or motels in town so visitors would have to stay overnight at local farms or businesses such as the Masonic Lodge or First National Bank before continuing on their journey the next day. The original downtown core of Kissimmee consisted of three blocks with only one street opening into each block which limited development opportunities for both residents and business people until 1925 when county officials decided to widen Highway 95 through town creating four more blocks which opened up new development possibilities including many high-end apartments and condos that still stand today along with several small businesses dotting what had once been a single-block commercial district downtown today known as Chatrium Place Mall (now called Champions Court). In 1936, Kissimmee became a key stop on the newly formed State Road System connecting Tallahassee, Tampa Bay and Jacksonville; it also served as a refueling point for truckers during World War II. The last major bus stop within city limits closed down in 1963 when state highway 99 replaced State Road System numbers 1-4 east of town concurrent with Interstate 495 making it easier for drivers to get around without stopping at any intersections while traveling between those three destinations; however some buses still stopped at City Hall across from Main Street where gasoline pumps still remain today inside the old school building adjacent to US 97th Armor Brigade Museum parking lot

The town became a flourishing trading post and grew to become one of the most important areas in south Florida. In 1823, Kissimmee became the capital of Florida. Kissimmee's growth stopped after the Civil War and it declined until it regained its status as a small town in 1918 when it annexed part of neighboring Maitland. The town's population peaked at over 100,000 in 1950, but has since decreased to around 50,000.
