The name "Kissimmee" has been spelled variously as Kiskimmee and Kissomee since 1795. The present spelling is believed to be derived from the Seminole word "kisa" meaning "a place where people gather." In 1819 A.D., Indian Chief Osceola brought his daughter Iola to live with him in what is now Kissimmee Township. Iola was married to Seminole Chief Tocobaga and bore him four children: Osceola (1819-1868), John (1821-1900), Mary (1824-1912) and Anna (1827-1920). After her husband's death in 1828 she returned to her father's home on Stickney Island near Stonington Landing until he moved back south in 1836 when he bought an interest in a tract of land that became Kissimmee Township; thereafter she resided permanently here with her son John and their three daughters: Mabel (baptized c 1830), Clara Jane (baptized c 1840) and Anna Belle (baptized c 1850). In 1851 Tocobaga sold his remaining interest in the township to James Deering for $1,500 Deering founded Deering's Store which still stands today on Park Avenue in downtown Kissimmee. On November 3, 1861 King George III granted a charter for what would become known as Miami University –later University of Miami –in memory of his late sister Princess Elizabeth.[1] When white settlers began arriving into this area they started calling this spot Sugar Creek because there were no sugar plantations then living hereabouts. On December 15, 1907, Kissimmee was incorporated as a city by order of the Florida Legislature. The city's first mayor was J.B. Pritchard and it became an independent municipality on February 16, 1908. It adopted a new charter in 1912 which included provisions for the erection of public buildings and the appointment of a city manager. In 1916, Kissimmee annexed Partin County and began to offer municipal services to that area. In 1930, Kissimmee annexed Lakeland and began to offer municipal services to that area as well. In 1936, the city annexes Indian Shores and began offering municipal services to that area as well. In 1941, Kissimmee annexed Belleair Beach and begin offering Municipal Services thereto also
