Key West was founded on December 14, 1835 by Lieutenant Colonel John P. Morgan as a trading post on Mobile Bay. The name Key West came from Spanish "La Vega de las Palmas", meaning "The Point of Rocks". The first European to locate in what is now Key West was Juan Fernandez de Oviedo, who sighted it on July 8, 1513 while sailing from Cuba to Spain with his fleet of ships anchored off Havana Bay. A second Spanish landfall happened on November 2nd of that year when Hernando Cortés and his army landed at Isla Santa Maria near present-day Marco Island after their failed siege of Pensacola Harbor). Francisco Vásquez de Coronado had been exploring America for years before setting out from Mexico City in search of an illusive Northwest Passage to India in 1539–40 expedition led by Pedro Menéndez de Avilés but no evidence has ever been found documenting thisexploration and it's possible he never reached American shores despite reporting finding an opening to North America – most likely via Canada or Alaska In 1668 Englishman John Smith discovered an uninhabited island off the coast ofFlorida which he named Long Island after himself (the longitude being measured eastward from Miami).
