Key West, Florida is a small town located on the southernmost tip of Cuba. The town was founded in 1835 by Englishman John Key and his wife Lucy Key as a British trading post on the mouth of the TCP River. In 1898, Key West became part of the United States after Spanish America gained independence from Spain. The area now known as Key West was first settled by Native American people who hunted and fished in the nearby Bahamas Banks Estuary. In 1834, Captain John Fitch discovered saltpeter mines in what is now called Fort Myers Beach. With this new source of income, Key West began to grow rapidly and by 1840 had a population of 300 people. By 1860, Key West had reached 1,500 people and it was designated as an independent city by US Congress. By 1870, however, Key West's economy had collapsed due to competition from Miami and other coastal cities. However, key entrepreneurs such as JB Selfridge continued to exploit trade with Cuba until well into the 20th century. Today, much of what used to make up key west's historical background can be found at various museums located throughout the community including old fortifications dating back to 1795 which are now part of Historic District #2; The Battery Maritime Museum which preserves artifacts depicting maritime history; The USS Constitution Museum which showcases naval history; and The Stranahan House which overlooks Fort Myers Beach The earliest settlers in keywest were primarily Englishmen who sailed down TCP River for sugarcane plantations in Brazil or Venezuela during the mid-19th century. As sugar production increased around Havana (then known as Santiago), these men turned their attention southward towards Florida's thriving Keys region where they established themselves among local Seminole Indian populations already occupying land near present day Marathon Avenue and Harbour Drive within present day downtown keywest boundaries today! In 1835 John Key married Lucy Peel from England but they only resided here for six months before returning home because Lucy’s mother died soon afterwards while she was pregnant with their son William Peel Jr.–John’s second child! AfterLucy’s death in 1836 John returned to England but not before settling some 30 head of cattle he had tamed along with 10 hogsback 400 sheep he purchased from an Arab trader named Abu Bakr bin Abdullah ibn Samuda al-Qushayriyya at Anegada Island off Guantanamo Bay!! After arriving back in England he met his future wife Amalie Schleichert whom he married at London’s Guildhall on July 24th 1840!!! They would have five children: William (1841-1912), twins Frederick (1843-1926) & Amelia (1845-1924). Upon reaching Utopia Cay about 4 miles east southeast of shoreline just prior tax haven for white man & native woman—Keyserling Marriages were solemnized 14 Sept 1840 under Dutch Rule ivAHAllen Driscoll widowED!!!!!!!!! From this day forward all legal marriages between natives & whites took place under our rule—thus KEY WEST became once again “A WHITE MAN'S TERRITORY”!!! During most of its early years keywest experienced sporadic violence between local members over differences generated primarily through competing economic interests – principally those centered around sugar cane production! It wasn't until 1865 when one major event dramatically changed everything when violent riots erupted over disputed rights associated with boundary changes resulting from := European Union Treaty ceding Cuba to America!! Ultimately seven residents were killed including three policemen !! This led directly to calls for American annexation !! For more than a year skirmishes continued sporadically across wide areas surrounding town center leaving scores dead or injured—-keywest finally achieved peaceable status following passage 2nd territorial hall act 12 Dec 1865 !!!
