Keys West is a small town in Monroe County, Florida, United States. The population was 1,711 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Orlando–Kissimmee–Sanford metropolitan area. The town is located on the Keys Peninsula and bordered by Pinellas County to the east and Palm Beach County to the west. Key West's ZIP code is 33609. The first Europeans to arrive in what is now Key West were Spanish traders in 1565 who called it Maya Bayo ("Bayo Point"). They named it San Juan Bautista de las Vega del Sauzá los Reyes (St John Baptist's of Sauzá Harbour), after Saint John's Baptism Parish on Cuba where they had been quartered for a year preceding their arrival. A second group of Spanish traders, led by Ruy Lopez de Santangel, landed about November 2, 1568 near what is now downtown Key West and set up a trading post at Yacht Club Marina which they renamed La Isla de la Tortuga (The Island of Turtles). In 1625 Englishman Francis Drake discovered Jamaica while sailing around Cape Canaveral; his ship "Golden Hind" anchored offshore near present-day Marathon Beach on December 7th when he sighted four huge brown turtlebacks swimming across a reef into clear water some 100 yards off shore; soon thereafter he became familiar with this coastline as well as its deep-draft vessels that could navigate uncharted waters along its interior channels. On January 8th 1626 Drake sailed past Marathon Beach again less than one mile away - but this time he sighted Turtleback Cove instead of turtles! This event marks English landfall in mainland America for the first time ever! In 1764 Frenchman Nicolas Perrot explored both coasts from Martinique northward and named them Baie des Cayes ( bay of Cayes) after an island just north of Trinidad which Perrot had noticed from his ship during his voyage southwestward round Cape Horn. He thought that islands lying between cape Marco Polo (near present day Ponce City) and cape Ulla were those mentioned by Giovanni da Verrazzano centuries earlier by name Estero degli Elephantassi (Island of Elephants). From here he charted most parts of modern Florida including today’s Keys Peninsula before finally returning home in 1768 aboard “Dieu Fait Virginia” under Captain Pierre Dupont d'Urville.. Captain Dupont found many wrecks close toshore due to Hurricane Andrew which hit key west on August 28th 1992: all 509 crew members are still unaccounted for never finding any wreckage or bodies ashore but all missing equipment has since been recovered including 5 lifeboats and all 4 anchors lost overboard... There have been no new discoveries since then so much speculation & conjecture goes into these searches especially as there have been no storms or waves similar to those which caused such havoc back then... Some people think that high winds might be responsible for not finding any wreckage etc although there has yet to be any Proof anywhere else apart from rumours On October 6th 1821 US Naval Officer James Cook entered hurricane Irma's eye over Havana harbor with USS Pequod captained by Lt Cdr Joshua Griffiths during morning watch: Cook saw "a great storm lasting several hours", wind force 9 gale force winds reported at 260 Knots mph sustained gusts up to 310 knots gales @ .80 m/sec noted also very heavy rain squalls accompanied by lightning flashes Over Cubacontroller Capt George Read later wrote "... At 12 noon we observed landrising above our masthead...... [This] was followed immediately aft by another terrific gale Force wind[?] blowing directly opposite us [to] the barometer.... Our maintopsails began bellowing like bulldogs..... We bore right towards it....... Another terrible storm ensued... shortly after we made sail towards him...the headlong motion threw me out into open sea with my helm hard against my breast..... A moment later I felt myself Actor upon solid ground again." Although Catalin Macartney claimed sighting same thing only minutes later while onboard HMS Bellerophon captained by Lt Cdr George Baker: "A furious gale sprung up within few minutes afterwards, throwing everything astern nearly upon us; we lay without leeward tack all night long; appearance showed us surrounded by an enemy more numerous than ourselves ; however we managed finally TO make sound signals 3 times during daylight.............. No sooner did Day break than I perceived Land bearing SSE., distant about 12 leagues....There appeared before me a large basin covered with coral Atop Which appeared two Isles shaped like Showers Of Rain.........When I gotwithin gunshot thereof I could see Topaz Shells glittering Here & There thro' its Thundershower" These reports suggest that either Cook or Griffths possibly mistaken landfall for real island seen previously - neither vessel having actually passed over it! It should also be noted that Cook would circumnavigate mundually whilst making landfall whereas Griffths stayed stationary within range whilst taking position + chronographs records minute/second details thus enabling exact position determination unambiguously
