In 1868 Aspinwall donated 500 acres (2 km²) around present day downtown Key West to become part of what was then called Monroe County; this became known as Aspinwall Park which still remains today. By 1905, Key West had become an important transportation center due to its connection with Miami and its ability to connect both the Cuban market with American buyers as well as provide a haven for wealthy Cubans who wanted privacy while traveling in America. The city continued its growth during World War II as many key industries such as shipbuilding were developed in response to wartime demand. However, by 1945Key West had lost most of its significant industry and population; however, it continued as a popular tourist destination until 2000 when Hurricane Irma hit the island.]
