Gun magazines have a long and varied history in Key West. The first magazine to be published in the area was the "Key West Herald" which was published from 1845 to 1851. subsequent issues of the "Key West Herald" were published by various newspapers including the "Piney Woods Gazette", "The Lobster Pot", and "The Patriot". In 1872, The Daily News started publication in Key West. It is now known as The Florida Times-Union. In 1898, The Key West Chronicle began publication. In 1912, the paper changed its name to the KeyWest American and changed its editorial stance from pro-slavery to anti-slavery. From 1922 until 1951, it was called the KeyWest Journal. In 1954, after years of discussion between local publishers and representatives from Hearst Corporation, a new magazine publisher was formed with the goal of reprinting all existing key west publications under one roof. This new company became Hearst Magazines Incorporated (HMI). HMI printedissues of keywest magazines for over fifty years until it went out of business in 2000. During that time many famous writers such as Ernest Hemingway, F Scott Fitzgerald and William Saroyan wrote articles for key western magazines including For Whom The Bell Tolls and Lost Highway. Some well know photographers such as Edward Weston also took advantage of these publications while living or working in Key West during this time period

This left Key West with unregulated firearms sales that led to widespread crime committed with impunity by locals with access to guns. Angered by this situation, businessman Augustus Fenton reopened his store called The Pistol House under new ownership in 1903 and started selling handguns only again under license from the Union of South Florida government inspectors who were now empowered to regulate firearm sales statewide due to statehood changes brought about by the election of Grover Cleveland in 1884. In 1915 Charles Wickersham opened a gunsmithing business adjacent to his hardware store on Constitution Street which still stands today as Wickersham Gunsmithing & Armory Co., Incorporated (CWGA). From 1915 until 1923 CWGA produced firearms for both civilians and military use under a variety of brand names including American Rifle Works (ARW), US Naval Weapons Factory No 1 (UNF1), US Marine Corps Pistolnery School Pistol Team No 1-3 (MCPT1-3) etc., among others CWGA also manufactured parts for internal combustion engine vehicles at their factory near Government Center between 1918-1923 while also manufacturing bicycles at their original location across Constitution Avenue from 1916-1920 . This period saw key advances within America's fledgling firearm industry including: universal magazine capacity standardization via Browning/Barrett magazines; development of metallic cartridge cases capable of holding more than five rounds per clip; rapid expansion of privateer arms manufacturers into military production during World War I through contracts with various governments; establishment of nationally regulated arsenals like those operating in Chicago (& later New York City) during Prohibition era; major consolidation throughout America's firearm industries during the Great Depression when numerous major companies merged or went public; culminating with passage of National Firearms Act Amendments OF 1934 which defined all currently legal handguns as machineguns
