Bullet production increased after the American Revolution, and Key West became a center for bullet production. By 1825, Key West had become one of the leading ammunition producers in America. In 1836, U.S. Army Colonel James Wilkinson developed a new type of bullet that could penetrate armor plate. This bullet was called the Wilkinson Bullet and became very successful during the Civil War. After the Civil War, ammunition production decreased due to new technologies such as rifle bullets and artillery shells. However, key west continued to be a major producer of bullets until around 1950 when local firearms manufacturing ceased completely

During World War II, Key West played an important role as a naval base for the United States military: it housed both Navy ships and Army units stationed throughout Florida and Puerto Rico. The town also saw extensive use of gas lights for night navigation during that time period. In 1957, Key West adopted its current name - "Keywest" - reflecting its status as both a city and colony within the US territory of Puerto Rico at that time. In recent years, tourism has become one of key aspects of KeyWest's economy; however many residents still rely on their fishing industry for income. Asbestos contamination issues have been identified in some areas of town; however this has not led to any significant changes in how Main Street operates or how businesses operate out of doors since these concerns were disclosed nearly two years ago
On Key West, Florida history began with the arrival of Spanish settlers in the late 16th century. In 1821, American Commodore John C. Stennis arrived on Marlins Passage to explore the area and found a prosperous port which would become an important key in Spanish America. The town was founded on a small island near the entrance of the harbor and quickly became known as "the most beautiful place in America." The town's early years were filled with struggle, however, because there was no reliable water source and many of the colonists had to work hard to survive. By 1830, Key West had grown so large that it absorbed another small island within its boundaries. The town’s growth continued until 1845 when it caught up with Jacksonville, Florida and ceased to exist. In 1898, Key West became part of Cuba after Spain relinquished its claim to what is now Miami-Dade County. As part of this change in ownership, Key West’s post office moved from Havana to Santiago de Cuba (now Casablanca). This move signaled a new age for KeyWest as it saw increased development thanks to Cuban immigrants who wanted warmer climates and more access to education than they could find back home. Santiago de Cuba also served as an important stopover for American ships during World War II dueits location between Havana and Tampa made it a convenient refueling point for Allied bombers escorted by USAAF fighter planes flying over Europe. Key West's success postwar years led to an increase in tourism; today, visitors can enjoy everything from swimming at one of the city's nearly 2 dozen beaches all the way up into its historical district full of art galleries and old sugar plantations
