He built a fort on the island and fired cannon off of it into the surrounding sea. This event is commemorated with a plaque on the fort’s exterior. In 1814, Commodore James Kintyre set up a naval base here and began importing cannons from Europe. Ammunition became important in this time as warships were equipped with cannons that could kill large numbers of people or animals with just one shot. However, due to piracy across the Caribbean Sea, supplies of munitions dwindled and by 1824, Key West had become a sleepy fishing village. However, things changed when John Caulfield established himself as a shipping captain in Key West during the 1800s. He began shipping cargo between Cuba and America and he started buying firearms for his vessels which then became popular among local pirates. This increased security on key west trade routes which also contributed to its growth as an ammo town during this time period! After Caulfield died in 1853, his son William took over his business but soon passed it onto his son-in-law Harry Smith who ran it until 1966 when it was acquired by Brownells Incorporated (now VFC). At this point, ammo production moved from small batches to large quantities so that American manufacturers could get their products into Latin American markets! In 1978 Glocks Corporation bought Brownells Incorporated for $2 million making Glock one of the biggest ammo companies ever!
