Fenton also collectedshells off Key West beaches for his private collection until his death in 1951. Spanish explorer Juan Ponce de León discovered Greater Florida Keys on October 15th, 1511 when he sailed past Cape Canaveral on his return trip from Havana Harbor with three ships seeking treasure lost by Columbus four years earlier while exploring America's Southwest coast aboard Santa Ana de Avila flagship La Niña . Less than two weeks later Ponce sighted what appears to have been an uninhabited cape about 8 miles east of present day Anastasia Island . Although this landfall may have misled him into thinking that America extended all the way to Cuba (!), subsequent exploration led him to believe that perhaps Puerto Rico or Georgia lay beyond those cape shores! On November 2nd1502 , Francisco Vásquez Elizalde surveyed part of what is now Flagler County - including key areas such as Anastasia Island - upon landing at Stonington Harbor just south of present day Jacksonville Landing !! After successfully concluding a treaty with indigenous Timucua Indians naming themselves Tequestas (or "Tequesta") pursuant to which they gained exclusive rights to trade with Spain along both coasts of Florida via Point Comfort (present day Fort Meade), he proceeded directly inland across Coopers Inlet Crossing today's mile wide Asuncion Bridge before turning westward onto Flagler Beach Cemetery Road today’s Overseas Highway 1A quickly rounding Abbey Atoll and straddling Asuncion Bay !! This event forms muchofthe modern boundary between Monroe County eastward (to include all or most of downtown Jacksonville) and Flagler County westward spanning nearly 12 mi., ending at Asuncion Bridge !! Today marks one hundred years since this important discovery !!

In 1835, Key West became part of Spanish America and began to experience large waves of immigration from Europe. This increase in population led to significant infrastructure development including hospitals, schools, churches and streets named after European immigrants such as King George V Streets (Spanish: río de la Concepción), Queen Victoria Streets (Spanish: calles Real de las Islas Filipinas) and Prince Alfred Street (Portuguese: Rua Princesa Isabel da Costa). During World War II, KeyWest played an important role as one of four airfields used by U-2s during Operation Neptune's Spear; these flights were monitored from nearby bases along with those flown by Allied pilots flying over Nazi-occupied Europe
