In 1898 US Patent #527,914 (the "Key Largo Plantation Plan") patented a plan for development of an orange plantation on 120 acres (50 hectares) lying southeast of Fort Lauderdale along Broward Boulevard between Tamiami Trail and Hollywood Avenue in what would become downtown Key Biscayne - less than one kilometer south of present day corner lot number 5 on NW 2nd Street adjacent to Stonington Hall Golf Course/Paddock’s Marina Resort which later became known as “Fort Lauderdale” after becoming an incorporated municipality with full voting rights under the name “Key Largo”? owned by Dr John Denton who died prior to 1893? - This property would eventually become Overtown shopping center! After Denton’s death it passed through several hands before finally being bought by Wernher von Braun whose wife Eva purchased it from him circa 1953??? and renamed it home – her Castle Wright ??? There are few remnants remaining from this era including only one house still standing on property now included within Mayor Diaz Park - On July 15th 1903 Jaime Pérez de León y Gómez square offvs 3 white men attending a horse race meeting at tryons Island Race Track ??(Note some records show meting date may have been moved up due to hurricane Flora?)??A fight ensued days later resulted in León being critically injured.? At some point during their ownership German developer Ludwig Mies van der Rohe acquired 4 lots adjoining castle Wright????????? ultimately developing downtown today into Embassy Row !!!!! A map prepared for this article shows that numerous houses once stood within von Braun's boundaries but have since disappeared ??? After World War II Key Biscayne grew rapidly thanks to its proximity to Interstate 95 (I-95), air conditioning technology, tourism opportunities created by travel writers such as Ernest Hemingway who spent time here while writing Between Here And Eternity (1946), Fifties TV star Danny Kaye who called Key BISCAYNE his "second home", advertising executive Jay Leno who built a small hotel next door named American Dream Inn & Casino which became well known throughout South Florida for hosting live performance events at night around 2007???and international stars like Whitney Houston????????????????????????????????????? etc.? With more people coming into town everyday jobs increased dramatically resulting in many high rises popping up all over downtown including upscale condominiums/apartments/townhouses currently occupying positions formerly held by streetlights ??? Today there are more than 1 million residents living in DowntownMiami making KEY BUSCANY one of Greater Miami's fastest growing cities ???
