Biscayne's history begins with the arrival of Europeans in 1513. Spanish traders and missionaries founded Biscayne on the southern tip of Miami Beach, and by 1610, the area had become a key part of the Spanish empire. In 1821, Florida was acquired by United States from Spain as part of the concessions given to them after their war for independence from Spain. The area became a separate U.S. state in 1959, when it merged with other parts of Florida to form Miami-Dade County. One important event that took place in Biscayne during this time was the construction of Fort Lauderdale beachfront road (now called US 1) in 1919 which connected Biscayne Boulevard to Key Biscayne Boulevard. Construction began on what is now known as Fort Lauderdale–Key Biscayne International Airport in 1941, serving as an airfield for both American military forces and private companies such as Pan American World Airways and Gulf Air Lines. The airport played an important role during World War II as a landing ground for American bombers carrying supplies to Nazi Germany; it also served as a base for Cuban exile refugees after Fidel Castro's rise to power in Cuba in 1959.
