Key Biscayne was founded in 1903 by Dr. John A. Drexel and named for the then-thousand-acre (400,000 hectare) Key Largo island which he bought from the Miami Company. The area now comprising Key Biscayne was first purchased in 1901 by Colonel James Kenedy of Fort Sheridan, Illinois as part of a land purchase that also included what is now South Beach and Little Havana.
