Key Biscayne is a city located in Miami-Dade County, Florida, United States. The population was 116,844 at the 2010 census. Key Biscayne was one of the first communities in Miami-Dade County and was founded by Cuban refugees in 1927. In 1959, after Fidel Castro's Revolution overthrew Fulgencio Batista's Cuban government, Key Biscayne became an American territory and was governed by a US military garrison until its annexation by Miami in 1963. It has since become an internationally known retirement community and tourist destination. The area that now encompasses Key Biscayne was originally part of the Palatine Domain located on what is now Bayfront Park Boulevard between Northwest First Street and Northwest Second Street on the mainland side of Lake Worth; it included all or part of today's Everglades National Park (then called "the swamp"), much of Coconut Creek (now part of South Beach), and most of Broward County (then including West Palm Beach). On March 5, 1824, Spain ceded this area to Great Britain as part of the Treaty of Paris following Ulysses S. Grant's successful invasion of Cuba; it remains one engine driving British maritime activity along key shipping routes around Cuba for centuries thereafter. In 1907–1908 Gussie Moran leased 3/4ths interest in land from Jno.[1] & H[eachey]'s heirs for $2 per acre lot with 6 tracts total comprising . The key's name is derived from theBahamian word Biscayne, meaning "Island at the Bay." In 1857, after being ceded to Cuba by Spain, Biscayne Key became part of the United States. On November 5, 1959, when Fidel Castro announced his Marxist revolution in Cuba and invaded that country eleven days later, U.S. Ambassador to Havana Robert F. Kennedy ordered American naval forces to respond with force if necessary to protect Cuban citizens and property interests on Biscayne Key. This led to what is now known as Operation Neptune's Spear: an American military intervention in Latin America which helped oust Fidel Castro from power and restored democracy there.
