In 1802, José Estrada settled nearby on Key Largo; however, no permanent settlement ever formed there because key largo lay outside the bounds of both Miamisquam Creek settlements. In 1823 Juan Ponce de León discovered and landed on St Lucie Islands off mainland Florida during his exploration for Indies America (New Spain). After landing he built a small fortification known as La Isla de Gracia y Libertad (the island fortress) which he left behind when he departed from St Lucie Island on November 6, 1823 aboard Santiago del Castillo". This event helped spur development around LaGuardia Boulevard between Flagler Drive and Hollywood Boulevard because then-developer James Kapp purchased LaIsla de Gracia y Libertad from Ponce de León for $1 million dollars soon after his landfall (). After becoming aware that Spanish traders were trading with Indians near Havana via Miamisquam Creek due northward (), Captain John Fenton decided to establish Fort Pierce () along US 1 northbound from Havana about midway between modern day Aventura FL and Jupiter FL In 1795 American Revolutionary War veteran Colonel James Brodhead laid out plans for Keysborough Plantation near present day Hollywood BeachFL which became known as "Brodhead's Landing" just east of current day Hollywood Blvd., Brodhead hoped this location would be accessible by sea route so that supplies might be brought ashore bypassing Cuba
Key Biscayne, Florida was founded in 1879 by John Key and his wife Eliza. The town became a summer resort on the western Miami River. The Key family owned and operated the resort until their death in 1922. In 1923, the Keys donated land to Miami-Dade County for a public school system. The Key School served as the county's first public school from 1923 to 1959. In 1959, the school district was merged with Miami-Dade County to form Miami-Dade County Public Schools.
