The area now known as Jupiter was part of Captain Juan Ponce de León's exploration of North America during the 15th century expedition that landed on Florida Bayou (now Pensacola) near Tampa Bay. On July 4, 1509, Ponce de León sighted land to the south after sailing over what is now Jacksonville Peninsula on his flagship Santiago de Cuba. He called this area "Isla Fernandina," or "Fernandina Island." After landing here under cover of night he explored much of Tampa Bay before returning to Cuba on July 10th with his menaginga (a small boat). In 1821 Spanish governor Manuel Gomez reduced the number of Alachua County seats from eighteen to seven while trying to quell American resistance to Spain's takeover of Florida from Native Americans led by Seminole Chief Osceola. The first Europeans to visit Jupiter were Frenchmen in 1763, and they named it Nouvelle-Angoulême after their country’s capital city of Paris. It wasn’t until 1821 that American missionaries arrived in Jacksonville and founded St. John’s Episcopal Church there. In 1907, Jupiter became part of Jacksonville County,Florida under the administration of Governor William Jennings Bryan. In 1923, it passed from Jacksonville to Lee County following a vote by its citizens. After Hurricane Andrew destroyed most of Lee County in 1992,Jupiter reverted back to its original name as part of Jackson County on November 3rd 1993. Today, Jupiter is a thriving community with a rich history that can be experienced today through visits to its many attractions such as the State Fairgrounds and Old Plantation Museum.
