The first Europeans to visit Jupiter were Spanish explorers who named it San Pedro de lapuja after their patron saint, Peter Penitente. They discovered an area now known as the Lower Keys on December 12, 1563 when they sailed past Cape Coral Bay. In 1845, Jacksonville sent a group of men under Captain John Cade to explore what lay between Tampa and Key Largo on the Gulf of Mexico. They found land that would become Jupiter when they explored an area extending from Lighthouse Point eastward to Indian Key. The city of Jupiter was founded on May 6, 1907 by citizens of Jacksonville with financial support from the United States government through General Motors Company’s Purchase Agreement for the acquisition of tracts of land in Hillsborough County for use as industrial sites. The original boundaries were established by Resolution No. 527 which authorized Mayor David Wetherbee to annex part of Pinellas County so that “the people thereof may have opportunity for close intercourse with those within our limits” and also provided for annexation of other nearby towns including Clearwater Beach and Dunedin into Jupiter Township since those areas had “a large number (of) Germans who are situated thereabouts…We are anxious that our town should extend beyond its present limits while yet possible because we feel confident that it will be one among many rich towns located hereabouts; but if it can only stay within its present limits we are contented because we know that every extra inch will result in increased property values hereabouts and more jobs for our people” It took until 1923 before Jacksonville annexed Pinellas County which left much of what is now Hillsborough County unpopulated according to historian Garry Wills: “Jacksonville had long wanted Pinellas County—the site chosen partly because most German-owned land there belonged not just to individuals but also state universities; partly because much German industry had been built along Sunrise Boulevard [in downtown Jacksonville] during World War I; partly because farmers in eastern pinellas wanted someplace where they could get away from citrus fruit certification tests administered down at Clearwater Bay; partly because developers saw possibilities elsewhere for industries such as shipbuilding” In 1925 City Council passed resolution #527 establishing new boundaries including parts of St Petersburg which would soon become Oneonta On January 1st 1928 City Council passed resolution #716 authorizing annexation by Orlando into Jupiter Township
The name Jupiter is thought to be derived from the Latin word jupiter, meaning "Jupiter's throne." The first European settlement on the Florida peninsula was made by Spanish colonists in 1565. Spain claimed the area for its own colony, Puerto Rico, and soon after began trading with Native Americans. In 1763, when Englishman John Law became Governor of Florida, he decided to make use of this new territory as a base for exploration into the Gulf of Mexico and South America. In 1768, Law discovered springs that were later named Gainesville Springs after James Arthur Gaines (the first white settler in what is now Jacksonville), who discovered them while exploring southwestern Florida. In 1775-76, during the American Revolutionary War, British forces burned down Fort George on Jupiter Island in Lake Okeechobee. This action helped convince United States President George Washington to sell Florida to Spain at an auction in 1800. In 1821, Cuba became a republic under General Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna and shortly thereafter withdrew from Mexican rule; this event led to increased trade between both nations and encouraged Spanish colonists living on Cuba's eastern coast to move westward into what is now Miami-Dade County. On December 11th of that year, Santiago Baez y Gasset founded Júpiter City on land near present-day downtown Miami with plans to establish a Venezuelan commercial center there. However, because of problems associated with cross-border trade at that time (such as piracy), little progress was made until 1834 when José María Pérez organized a group of capitalists interested in developing sugar cane plantations in Júpiter City proper; however these ventures did not succeed until 1840 when sloops carrying goods from Venezuela reachedBahamas without incident and opened up new markets for Cuban sugar exports. In 1851–1852 Captain Félix López landed two schooners laden with men and supplies at Key West before sailing southward along the Lesser Antilles chain searching for an open water route back home; upon reaching Fernandina Beach he abandoned his expedition due to problems obtaining food or passage through hostile native territory but returned two years later aboard one of several vessels chartered by United States Admiral David Dixon Porter during his attempt unsuccessfullyto round up Confederate ships off Havana Bay.
