Jupiter, Florida history started long before the modern day town of Jupiter was founded. The area that is now Jupiter was first settled by Seminole Indians in the late 17th century. By 1836, a group of English farmers had moved into the area and began to develop what is now known as Jupiter Township. In 1868, during Reconstruction in America, General James P. Hindman purchased land in present-day Jupiter for $1,000. Hindman decided to use the land to build a summer resort and named his new community after himself – Hindman Beach. The following year, Hindman Beach became an incorporated town and continued to be called so until 1923 when it changed its name back to Jupiter Township. As part of the post-World War II boom in Florida, much development took place in Jupiter Township between 1949 and 1957. Many large companies such as Jardine Matheson Lines and Philips Phillips opened their doors within the township limits while others such as State Farm Insurance Company built factories or warehouses hereabouts. Additionally, many subdivisions were constructed throughout Easy Acres Park adjacent to the township boundaries which continues to this day provide homes for residents of both townships today. The growth of industry caused some problems however; overgrazing on agricultural lands led to increased levels of dust created by equipment being used at nearby businesses; moreover water supplies became scarce due to city growth along Lake Okeechobee Boulevard close by and leakage from underground pipes from industrial plants near downtown Jacksonville (now Jacksonville Landing). In response, various ordinances were passed regulating noise levels at businesses operating within township boundaries; these laws remain in effect today with one exception – loud music stopped being allowed at venues located inside Easy Acres Park following a ruling from Circuit Court Judge Stanton Hargrave who stated that “it would not serve any useful social purpose” if people could only listen passively while enjoying live music outside their homes/businesses. With more than 1 million people living within easy access proximity of each other during this time period there was little need for one municipality’s zoning regulations on behalf of all residents when different places were offering similar services without havingto pay an extra fee
Jupiter, Florida was founded on August 14, 1959 by settlers from Jacksonville, Florida. The town was named for the planet Jupiter, which is in the solar system. On December 4, 1959, the first home in Jupiter was built and it served as the town's first post office. The town grew quickly and by 1961 there were over 100 homes and businesses in Jupiter. In 1965, a water pipeline was developed to bring water from Tampa Bay to Jupiter and the town began to grow even faster. By 1970, there were over 300 people living in Jupiter and it had its own library and high school. The towns growth stopped in the early 1990s when oil prices collapsed. After years of economic decline, most of Jupiter's residents left or were forced out by rising costs associated with infrastructure improvement projects such as new roads and schools that had not been funded by tax dollars.
