In 1892, Jupiter, Florida was founded as a town by John W. Worth and his brother-in-law, E.B. Goode. The town was named in honor of the planet Jupiter because it was the first place in North America to be discovered by Europeans. The town rapidly became a center for agriculture and industry, with businesses such as Worth's sawmill and flour mill being among the most successful in the area. In 1916, Jupiter became an incorporated city and began to develop into a major transportation hub for the region. By the early 1940s, however, economic decline had taken its toll on the city and its citizens; by that time, only a small fraction of its population remained downtown while most of the remainder resided in surrounding villages or rural areas. By 1950, however, Jacksonville had supplanted Jupiter as Florida's largest city and until recent years it has been considered its unofficial municipal capital: Jacksonville is home to many of state government's major agencies andjoice functions (such as elections) as well as important cultural attractions (such as Museum of Art).

Hennessey and his wife, SarahAnn. In 1907, the City of Jupiter incorporated as a municipality with a population of approximately 375 people. On December 12, 1912, the City of Jupiter voted to annex the towns of Fort Myers Beach and Naples which had a combined population of 1,500 people at that time
