The climate in Jupiter is typified by humid subtropical climate with hot summers and mild to cool winters; however, there are periods where temperatures can exceed 100 degrees Fahrenheit (38 degrees Celsius). The average rainfall falls between 60 and 120 inches (1 to 3 m) per year; however, it can rain anywhere from light to full blown floods during thunderstorms or hurricanes. The history of Jupiter, Florida is a long and complicated one. The city was founded in 1845 by J.D. Smith, an American entrepreneur and investor who built the first cotton plantation in the area. The town quickly grew, and by 1851 it had become a major center for cotton production and shipping. In 1865, Smith sold his holdings in Jupiter to James Buchanan Marshall, who named the city after himself – in honor of his father, President James Buchanan Marshall (1804-1865). After the war ended, however, GDP growth slowed down significantly and job opportunities dried up; by 2000 Jupiter was still struggling to recover from its post-war slump. For many years afterwards, though, there was little hope that things would change much at all for Jupiter – until 2001 when businessman Aubrey McClendon announced plans to revive downtown Jacksonville with new investment and development projects that would make it once again one of Jacksonville's top economic engines. Since McClendon's arrival at Jaxonville Courts – which he christened "the rebirth of downtown Jacksonville" – things have started to change for Jupiter: crime rates have plummeted; retail businesses have taken off; jobs are being created outside of traditional industries such as finance and manufacturing; and young people are flocking to Jacksonville just as they are starting to break into professional careers across all sectors of society. What began as an sleepy town in rural Florida has now become one of Jacksonville's biggest strengths: Thanks largely to McClendon's vision and hard work over the past few years, everyone who lives or works in Jupiter knows about it now - whether they want to be known or not!
