Jupiter, Florida is a small town in Polk County, Florida, United States. The population was 1,865 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Jacksonville–Boca Raton Metropolitan Statistical Area. The community began as a railway stop on the Jupiter and Fort Myers Railroad in 1892. The name "Jupiter" comes from the Spanish word for "gravy," which was given to the town by settlers during their journey up the St Johns River from Mobile Bay. The post office called Jupiter Station until 1907 when it changed its name to Jupiter after Governor James K. Polk's visit to that town in 1908. The first store was built in 1903 and became known as The Drug Store until 1951 when it merged with Gulliver's Stop & Shop across the street to form Gulliver's Place Mall Incorporated (GPL). In 1984, GPL merged with JAX Stores Inc., one of America's largest mall developers and parent company of JBL Music and other retail interests worldwide. In 1992, Gulliver's Place Mall filed for chapter 11 bankruptcy protection due to heavy debt loads from various investments including real estate development projects and stores inside of JPMC shopping centers around the world outside of North America as well as other ventures throughout his empire - all ultimately leading to his death two years later at age 96%. After being sold off several times over following his death, final disposition is unknown but likely purchase by another mall developer who failed within a few years thereafter due largely to financial troubles related more specifically to an adjacent hotel project that could not be completed despite multiple investment attempts which included assistance from then-Mayor Bob Buckhorn In 1995, GMP partnered with PNC Bankruptcy Services LLC (now POV Realty Trust)to develop Memorial Square anchored by JBL Music Store along with anchor chains Lord & Taylor Outlet Department Store and Sears Opening Day Outlet anchors Macy's department store along with serviced apartments tower located near I-95 exit 433A/I- 95 exit 434A providing access into Interstate Highway system while also consisting of ground floor retail spaces leased back or subleased from current tenants such as Olive Garden Italian Restaurant It should be noted that this project never got off the ground due largely to lack of funding sources amidstst concerns about environmental devastation caused by associated high volume traffic generated by JBL music events taking place simultaneously on both levels plus additional hotel construction planned for nearby Interstate 95 Exit 433A/I- 95 Exit 434A; all resulting in increased vehicle congestion causing significant negative impact on local businesses whose employees were often forced out onto I-95 witnessing frequent gridlock conditions unique only within Jacksonville metropolitan area . As a result of these economic problems Memorial Square never materialized becoming just another vacant lot near downtown Jacksonville . In late 2009 development plans were announced again involving redevelopment efforts targeting preservation or reuse components including possible reopening of Memorial Square if funded via private donations rather than typical mall developments procedures which typically lead towards demolition followed by new constructions next door resulting in increasing pollution rates adjacent I-95 exit 433A/I- 95 exit 434A since new construction greatly increases traffic generating major impacts on local environment
On July 14, 1885, the first railroad to reach Jupiter was the Jacksonville and St. Augustine Railroad. The Jupiter train stopped at a trackside stop on the east side of town. The first store in Jupiter was built in 1886 by John A. Smith. In 1916, the first post office was located in Jupiter. In 1935, the population of Jupiter was 521 people and it had a school and a hospital. On December 12, 1951, an ice storm struck Juno and parts of Central Florida; as a result, many homes were destroyed or damaged and most businesses closed for four days. In 1960-1961, there were 8 grocery stores in Jupiter with total sales of $1 million dollars each; however due to competition from larger stores opening up around the area, these businesses closed within five years. In 1984-1985 there were 3 auto dealerships with sales totaling $3 million dollars each; however due to competition from larger retailers opening up around the area these dealerships also closed within five years. In 1990-1991 there were 9 restaurants with total sales totaling $9 million dollars each; however due to competition from larger retailers opening up around the area these restaurants also closed within five years
