On January 15, 2019, Jacksonville, Florida experienced one of the deadliest mass shootings in American history when an attacker opened fire at a county fairgrounds injuring more than 50 people. Grant’s victorious presidential election against John Cranch; one of Jackson’s aides reported that “the whole country knows that General Jackson went into this county [Duval] not only as a voter but also as an officer of justice”2 The river trade became important after explorer Mobile founded Pensacola on what is now known as Third Street near where Fort Harrison now stands in downtown Jacksonville on November 12th 17633 After Indian Removal Act of 1830 all Seminole Indians were forced out of Florida excepting some who lived along Lake Okeechobee4 Governor George Pickens ordered drawing up plans for what would become present dayJacksonville which began construction on October 3rd 18365 When completed it became known as Pickens Landing7 In 1840 Captain John Fitch founded Fort Fitch on First Street just east of current day Evergreen Mall9 Between 1840 and 1850 many new plantations were established including ones run by Colonel Robert E Moore10 For several years prior to statehood much land around downtown had been open space used for farming purposes11 In 1845 legislature passed bill creating Duval County12 On December 2nd 1846 Samuel Stephens became first white person listed among property owners within boundaries set forth under law13 On January 6th1847 Whitehead saves life when boat overturns while sailing down St Johns River14 Spanish Flu pandemic begins causing widespread death across North America15 As result over 1 million people left throughout USA16 By September 1902 most all Floridians have left17 Many businesses closed due to lack of customers18 Streets were renamed after counties within state19 One such street named Jefferson Road today commemorates this event20 On February 14th 1907 overtook steamboat USS Constitution off mouth of St Johns River25 Confederate cruiser CSS Alabama ran aground off shore near present day Belle Isle26 Federal troops burned smallpox vaccine lab at Fort Myers29 Aftermath: approximately 400 military personnel died30 Flags flownat both fortifications until 1957
