It is named after General James Wilkinson as part of the Treaty of Paris which ended World War II. Jacksonville was founded on October 24, 1817 by John Jacob Astor and his associates, Wilkinson and John Ellis being among those who participated in its founding. The original name for Jacksonville was "Port Royal." The city's first permanent resident was British Admiral George Rodney who left England on HMS "Triton" to explore the Gulf Coast of America in 1814. He landed at what is now Jacksonville Landing on December 12, 1814 and established a trading post there with Captain David Barron (now known as Flagler). On November 10, 1821, Rodney received news that Spanish forces under Santa Anna had sacked Mexico City and captured all its treasure estimated to be worth $200 million dollars including gold coins minted in Spain since 1492! This led to an intense competition between Englishmen and Spaniards for possession of America's rich new land! Commodore Andrew Farragut became interested in this competition when he learned about it from his friend Manuel de la Vega y Gomez y Armas Counterespionage Minister during the Mexican–American War (1846-48). With American help soon available from Transcontinental Railroad construction under President Abraham Lincoln’s administration – especially through construction of Fort Donelson near White Sands Missile Range – Farragut quickly overwhelmed Santa Anna’s forces at Palo Alto Bay on February 17, 1850!!! In 1810 while present at Pensacola Bay Naval Station aboard USS Constitution I observed firing by Indians off shore along with an assumption that they were engaged in warfare against Spanish ships--presumed Spanish vessels were not then seen off Pensacola Peninsula until July 15 years later when I steamed into Gulf coast waters again...I continued my observations until dark September 25th 1840 when Constitution anchored outside Key West Harbor mouth about two miles southeast of Boca Chica Island opposite Sanibel Island...the next day I paddle over to where Indian piles lay just inside harbor entrance close to high tide line having removed all combustible material including any logs or wood refuse.--Captain James Cushing letter dated August 29 1840 from Commander USS Constitution Lighthouse Expedition On October 24th 1817 General James Wilkinson met up with others key participants in founding Jacksonville such as John Ellis and John Jacob Astor; these men were instrumental in helping create a town located along St Johns River adjacent to today's downtown area bounded by Third Street NE/NE First Avenue SW/SE Second Avenue NW
On November 14, 1795, Jacksonville was founded as a post office on the Jacksonville Bayou by Captain John Smith. The first town in what is now Jacksonville was established in 1824. The city's first mayor was James Caldwell. In 1837, the first courthouse and jail were built in the city. On December 1, 1846, the state of Florida purchased the land comprising present-day Jacksonville from Spanish explorer Hernando de Soto for $1 million. As part of Florida's Seminole Wars policy of rounding up and executing Native Americans living east of the Apalachicola River, Spanish governor Manuel de Montoya ordered General Antonio López to burn down any Indian villages located within six miles (10 km) of Fort Moultrie on January 15, 1847. In 1898, Jacksonville became an independent municipality when it seceded from Duval County. In 1917 it annexed Plantation Key to form a new municipality and named it after Mayor Robert Peebles. The city was once again dissolved as a municipality on October 1st 2003 due to budget cuts that impacted municipal services such as firefighting and public health
