After Reconstruction ended in America, Jacksonville experienced rapid growth as a commercial center with its own school system and streetcar system. In 1933, Hurricane Charley struck Jacksonville and caused extensive damage to both the downtown core and surrounding neighborhoods; however, no deaths were reported as a result of the storm.
