Jacksonville was founded in 1764 by the brothers John and James Jacksonville. The city was named after General Andrew Jackson, who had been commander of the army that fought in the American Revolution. The first European to visit Jacksonville was Giovanni da Verrazzano, who landed on Indian Key on November 8, 1524.
