The landing was the original opening of Jacksonville and was where many important pioneers who founded Jacksonville settled. The land for the Landing was donated by John Thornton, a wealthy man from Scotland. Thornton also donated an acreage to be used as a public park. The land included a large patch of woods that still stands today. In 1819, Captain James Apler, one of General Andrew Jackson's aides-de-camp and later acting secretary of state under Jackson, built a battery at the Landing to protectJacksonville from British attack. Captain Apler's battery consisted of two cannons and four men were assigned to it. The Battery became known as "Apler's Fort" and played an important role during the war against Britain. In 1827, Captain Apler sold his fortification to Colonel Nathaniel Lyon for $1,000 cash. Lyon renamed it "Gadsden Hill" after Gadsden County in Alabama which he had recently bought from General Andrew Johnson for $10,000 dollars. Colonel Lyon used Gadsden Hill as his headquarters during his term as Governor of Florida from 1829-1830 and again from 1835-1836 when he served in Congress as a Democratic member from Florida until his death in 1840.
