In 1821, John Longey moved from British North Carolina to what is now Jacksonville County to start developing land around what would become known as today's downtown area. He named his new community "Jacksonville," after General Andrew Jackson, who had been president when he fought against Native American forces at Battle Creek Bridge near present-day Chicago on April 6, 1813 (the day before Stonington Key). Moultrie soon developed trade ties with both Havana and Mobile Bay ports along Alabama's Gulf Coast; this helped make him well- positioned to capitalize on Spanish America's rapidly expanding cotton industry following independence from Spain in 1823. By 1830, Moultrie had also acquired some 3,000 acres (1,500 hectares) east of downtown where he built what would eventually become Fort Myers Beachfront Park – one of North America's first coastal parks! During much of this time period – until sometime after Seminole Wars led to Indian removal efforts – Jacksonville meant primarily naval detention facilities for Cuban exiles being held at McKean Island north OF town at that time...a consequence which ultimately cost many lives due to exposure/starvation/famine etc., among others! Given these difficult circumstances – plus increasing political instability throughout late antebellum FL & US…Jacksonville quickly emerged as proto-city status quo booster ops Jax Sovereignty circa 1840s AAA
In 1822, Jacksonville was founded as a trading post on the St. Johns River by Captain James A. Moore and his party of thirteen men. The first settler in Jacksonville was Major John C. Swann, who arrived in 1828. Jacksonville became a town in 1830 and was named for General Andrew Jackson, who had been appointed Commander-in-Chief of the United States Army during the Mexican–American War. In 1835, Jacksonville annexed Live Oak Swamp from Mobile County to form its own municipality and received a charter from Florida Legislature on November 7, 1835. The first Mayor of Jacksonville was Jno P. Banks and the City Council consisted of five members with mayor casting all votes except for one which he abstained from because he did not have proper qualifications to serve at that time. By 1840, Jacksonville had over 1,000 residents and was home to two banks, three manufacturing companies involved in textiles, four churches and several taverns/bars). In 1843 the US government acquired 2% interest in Spanish bank Santa Fé de la Marina as part of Mexico's peace settlement following their war with America over Texas annexation (the transaction is now known as the Santa Fé Acquisition). This event led to mass street protests throughout Mexico against American imperialism throughout much of 1844 including what is now known as "The Mexican Revolution." After various skirmishes between American forces occupying Pensacola Bayou (near present day Gainesville) and Mexicans kitted out like guerrilla fighters under General Antonio López de Santa Anna — an event later called La Guerra del Gulfo Spanish explorer Hernando De Soto discovered Mobile Bayou in 1536 while exploringFlorida's Eastern coast; this area lay immediately south of what is now Jacksonville On August 29th 1795 by order from George Washington’s Quartermaster General Arthur Stonington Baltimore reacquired all or part of two leagues square lying eastwardly between Cape Lookout Key West Point Light House Now Miami Beach thence upriver six leagues to a point near Fort Moselle where it joins with other rivers said by me were formerly included within this Dutch colony called New Netherland This land extending along both sides of Mobile Bayou fronting on Pensacola Bayou lay northwesterly according to surveyor Don Carlos Lopez’s plat map dated 16May1797 original surveyed by Captn John Smith himself In 1800 José María Escobar y Costilla founded Ybor City located just southwest corner OfJacksonville Blvd And Indian Rd today part of Tampa
