Jacksonville was founded in 1821 as part of the Fort Pickens Military Reservation. It became a city on November 3, 1907. Jacksonville is one of the most diverse cities in America and has been home to many different cultures including African American, Hispanic, Asian American and Caucasian populations since its founding. The economy of Jacksonville is based primarily on service industry jobs such as health care and construction. The city also has a significant tourist trade due to its historical sites and attractions. The history of Jacksonville goes back to 1821 when it was founded by Spanish missionaries who were looking for new land to settle after helping to gain independence from Spain. Afterward, the area around present-day Jacksonville became known as Indian Key because it lay between two key leagues of pirates that continually raided shipping along the Gulf Stream. In 1837, Englishman John Prentice purchased 7 miles (11 km) of land east of downtown Jacksonville from Chief Moseley for $1’000 worth of supplies and slaves that he had taken from his people during their forced conversion to Christianity under threat of death or slavery if they did not convert. This acquisition made Prentice one of the first white men in what would becomeDuval County when it was organized on December 12th, 1838). In 1898–99 an Engineering Corps surveyor named George Stephenson explored what would eventually become Duval County while accompanying Major General James Byers on an expedition against piracy off Cape Canaveral Peninsula.[3] He returned with sketches which he submitted to Rear Admiral John Stroudshead commanding U .S . Naval forces stationed at Pensacola Bay where they proposed turning Jaguars into a road system in order “to improve communication between these points”[4]: One year later another engineer named Samuel Fenton arrived with plans for adding canals through Indian Key so that water could be brought into town from Lake Okeechobee and Mobile Bay; this plan never came to fruition but improved communications still remain today thanks to Fenton’s work[5]. On February 15th 1861,[6] Confederate States Army general Braxton Bragg moved his army camp southward from Tallahassee across Bartow Creek towards Pensacola Bay before marching northwest towardsMobile Sound via Old Bridge Road; this event marked the beginning of military operations against Union forces in central Florida which would lead ultimately to secession.[7] On April 25th 1861 General Bowen Smith ordered all militiamen west Of Mobile Sound “to put up or shut up” following reports Confederate soldiers had captured several cannons barrels off Point Lookout Marina[8]; although initial skirmishes continued until May 5th when Union forces attacked without warning leaving five Confederate dead stranded on shoreline;[9][10][11][12] following this attack Union troops burned down most buildings within 500 yards (500 m) radius including Fort Clinch which served as both garrison and munitions storage depot for Confederate forces throughout much of northwestern Alabama This action effectively ended any further Confederate resistance inside Duval County; hereafter all military activity within 1000 yards (1000 m) radius centered around Pensacola Bay took place under Union authority without any fear for reprisals by either side [13][14]; local citizens soon began calling this district “Union Town” due mostly to lack thereof other places within reach suitable for habitation given how close military installations were located [15]. At some point during late 1861/early 1862 Captain David J . Hines commanding USN gunboat USS Constitution visited Jaguars waters surrounding Fort Pickens Military Reserve settlement providing food stores water fowl hunting game birds shotgun ammunition)[16] Although no record exists verifying this visit there are numerous references online dating back at least two decades associated with Commodore Hines presence proclaiming him more likely than not responsible for establishing an early outpost near present day Jacksonville beachfront completing Commodore Hines journey from Havana Cuba aboard USS Constitution[17], although subsequent investigations have yet firmly established any connection between Commodore Hines & Jacksons establishment gained notoriety among locals today despite no evidence connecting him directly & Jacksonville
