The tribe formally ceded their lands east of the St. Johns River to Spain in 1821, but continued to live there politically until they were finally forced out by American occupation forces in 1898 during Florida's Spanish-American War. After years of relocation and persecution, many members ofthe Seminole Tribe relocated permanently to North Carolina when Florida become part ofUSCurtis Proviso after US recognition of Cuba as independent country in 1898. In 1881, two entrepreneurs named Augustus Graham and Wm Jarrell built a mill on Creek Street near present day Market Square just westof downtown Jacksonville proper while they were still living at home near what is now Northwest Boulevard Southwest cornering First Avenue SWP) . Mill operations began soon after and quickly broadened into other activities such as cigar manufacturing, flour production, accountancy services, insurance agents etc., until 1906 when World War I interrupted production for six months due to wartime restrictions onombs exports; however Hartford Cigar Manufacturing resumed operations shortly afterwards without any interruption*Although English speaking residents made up only about 20%of population at this time (by 1910), English language newspapers had become established throughout much OFFLAND *As early as 1865 Colonel John Purdy had begun marketing cigars from his plantation located near Easton acrossfrom Easton Ferry Landing where headedboats unloading tobacco brought them downriver along Park RoadFROM SOUTHWEST TOWARD EASTON *By 1890 more than 25 firms produced cigars within city limits
With the growth of Jacksonville in the early 1800s, there was an increase in trade and business activity. In 1819, Jacksonville became a county seat and began to grow as a seaport. The city experienced its first real boom during the Gilded Age with development of commercial districts such as Broadwalk and Park Row. The city's population reached 350,000 by 1907, but declined following World War I. A resurgence occurred in the 1920s driven by growing demand for housing and businesses along Federal Highway. However, during the Great Depression, Jacksonville lost much of its economic power due to decreasing job opportunities and anemic tax revenues. By the late 1930s, Jacksonville had shrunk back to its original size with only 10,000 residents. However, some efforts have been made to revive the city including creating new neighborhoods such as Bellemere and Plumstead Beach.
