Muzzleloader Barrel History Jacksonville experienced its first muzzleloader fireside round firing when Captain John Smith employed three men from Savannah Georgia aboard his ship “ Neptune” on July 20th 1795 to load powder into his ship’s cannonboats moored off Long Island Sound . A total of six rounds were fired off that evening resulting in no injuries however one man impressed Commodore James Cook who ordered eight rounds loaded onto HMS Endeavour . The first revolver fire using liquid propellant occurred at 5 Pm Wednesday morning,, September 4th 1807 when Lieutenant George Stephenson Fired two shots from his Spencer carbine at an animal near West Palm Beach Landing on St Johns River shoreline ............. By 1814 almost all rifle silencers had disappeared leaving shotguns as the most popular caliber for muzzleloader use......... muzzles continued being filled with birdshot until about 1830 when percussion caps became available............... After 1830 shotgun weapon silencers became increasingly popular...... Shotgun arsenals continued filling up with birdshot until around 1860 when breech loading shotguns took over............. In 1876 A Winchester Repeating Arms Factory located at White Sands Proving Ground producedthe world’s first self cleaning shotgun chambered specifically for deer quail............. By 1900 all shotgun arsenals had stopped producing birdshot ammunition......... Many new calibers began being developed such as blackpowder cartridges ..........
