Binoculars were first developed in Jacksonville, Florida over 150 years ago. Binoculars are used to see objects up close and detail they would not be possible to see with a single eye. The history of binoculars in Jacksonville is intertwined with the history of its residents. In 1821, Capt. James A. Butler received a shipment of new optical equipment from England and began using them in his business as an innkeeper and trader in Jacksonville. He became one of the first people to own binoculars and was able to use them for navigation on the St Johns River. In 1824, he built himself a cottage near the present day intersection of John Day Boulevard and Ft Myers Avenue where he stored his new equipment and sold lensed telescopes for viewing the stars at night. The success of Butler's business led him to open another store on Fort Myers Avenue in 1830 which he continued until his death in 1851. His wife also ran this store until her death in 1871; during this time period, Jacksonville's only Tiffany glass shop was opened on Washington Street by Mrs Armstrong (1849-1914). In 1853, Dr David Starr Jordan founded University Hospital which became JaxONet Hospital after it moved from Elliott Bayou into downtown Jacksonville following City Council approval on Sept 5th, 1854; prior to that it had been located at what is now called Government House on State Road 7 South (now Fort Meade Drive). After becoming Mayor Garrido ordered all public buildings including hospitals be relocated within 1 year due to funding shortages resulting fromthe American Civil War; University Hospital remained located downtown while JaxONet Hospital relocated across State Road 7 North into what is now known as Stadium Park East (later renamed Jaguars Stadium). When Dr Jordan retired from practice in 1896 he leftUniversity Hospital ownership & management wholly unto his son-in-law Edward Walsh who served as Vice President during my tenure starting January 1993 thru December 1998 Aswillingly I relinquish any say or decision about future operations hereinwith! A small group of English sailors under Captain John Hawkins landed on December 12, 1565, while exploring Native American holdings near St Augustine Sound off the southeast coast of Florida Peninsula. On January 7, 1566, Hawkins claimed key portions of Florida for England including Fort Myers (then part of Mobile), Pensacola (then part of Tallahassee), and Jacksonville; he named it Newfoundland after Queen Elizabeth I's brother King Edward VI of England who had recently come to power over Scotland. In 1692 Frenchman Jacques Necker became governor general of New France with supreme authority over all North America; he purchased land from the Timucua south of Tampa Bay for £4 per mile (1/2 acre). He built a plantation complex called La Jolla on South River just north of today's downtown area to provide food for his numerous Indian workers who constructed fortifications along this stretch of riverbank during French rule throughout much of Southeast Asia and much later during American rule following Japan's attack on Pearl Harbor in 1941 led to World War II which resulted in Japan's defeat at Hiroshima and Nagasaki Railroad development followed between 1900s into early 21st century including new shopping mall located near Interstate 495 exit 104 known as "The Galleria". By 1800s most Negroes living around Miami had been deported back to Africa or sold into slavery there; however many black professionals like Asahel Greene moved west to work jobs at Western Union Telegraph Company Station Road northeast corner Street between First Avenue North and Bank Street which later became home to Roy Rogers' ranch house known as " Arlington", one block east from present day Uptown neighborhood where major league football team Jaguars play their games today
The Jacksonville, Florida area was first settled by Native Americans in the late 16th century. The first European to visit Jacksonville was Spanish explorer Hernando de Soto in 1565. In 1814, General Andrew Jackson led an army through the area and burned down several plantations before reaching Mobile, Alabama. By 1821, Jacksonville was a small town with a population of only 100 people. However, it rose rapidly in importance due to its location on the Gulf of Mexico and its access to rivers that allowed for trade and commerce. The city's growth continued during the 19th century as both agricultural and manufacturing businesses grew up around it. By 1900, Jacksonville had a population of over 5,000 people and was one of America's largest cities.
