In 1861, Confederate forces attacked Union forces stationed in Jacksonville Peninsula; this led to an intense battle between the two armies which lasted for days. The Confederate force consisted mainly of heavy artillery pieces which easily overwhelmed Union troops; however, Private James Aiken managed to shoot down one such piece during the battle. During World War I (1914-1918), ammo shortages caused much havoc across Great Britain; however, Portsmouth got ready quickly enough and produced millions of rounds of ammunition just in time for wartime use. In 1939,[1] Japan occupied Manchuria; however, due to American embargo against Japanese arms exports,[2] all United States shipments into China were stopped.[3] This created large stockpiles within America's allies – European countries especially – which were soon tapped by Japan when it needed firearms supplies urgently (eastern Europe didn't fall into enemy hands until 1945).[4] The end result was an overabundance on munitions throughout America[5], which caused extensive damage both internally and externally[6]. For example: During 1941,[7] Philadelphia suffered through over 1 million losses due simply tobombing raids[8]; Hamburg lost around 100% her entire textile production because runners carried away huge amountsof TNT after explosions destroyed factories[9]; Rheinmetall plant at Kiel went up like a Christmas tree after several bombs hit nearby streets on 15 December 1943 after night bombing raids by RAF [10]; Dresden saw its population drop from half a million people in 1940 before Pearl Harbor happened to take place increased drastically six thousand people by April 1945 because armament plants had run out Of munition stocks weeks earlier
