In 1952, Weitzman retired from his business operations but continued to make donated equipment available to scientific organizations around America until his death in 1984. Jacksonville became an important manufacturing center during the Civil War because of its production of munitions and other items needed by Confederate soldiers fighting in that conflict. By 1875, however, Jacksonville's economy had turned negative due to competition from Tampa and other cities east of Interstate 95. The city underwent a transformation during World War II as it became one of the most heavily bombed areas in America with over sixty bombing raids conducted by the Japanese military during that time period alone. In 1945, following World War II's end and with the war having devastated so many communities throughout America, Jacksonville Mayor William Halsey decided to pursue development within downtown Jacksonville as an answer to its lack of housing options for workers and their families who were homeless or living in unsafe conditions because of wartime destruction. The result was Jaxon Park which would become one of America's most popular tourist destinations thanks to its beautiful waterfront location; free public beach access; variety of restaurants and amusement parks; shopping malls; large office buildings; numerous high school/university campuses;and more than two dozen hotels/motels alongJacksonville Beach Boulevard between Ocean Front Drive (west side) and McCoy Parkway (east side). After years of planning and construction work which began in earnest in 1951-1955 inclusive - Jaxon Park opened to the public on July 1, 1946 when President Harry S Truman dedication ceremonies featuring Governor George C Marshall were held at Federal Hall overlooking Jackson Beach Boulevard just north of Center City business district
The city of Jacksonville Beach was founded on May 14, 1902 by J.B. Shipley and his family. It was named after Father John Bogue, a missionary who had been sent to the area in 1892. The city began to grow rapidly as a result of its location at the mouth of the St Johns River and its access to water transportation. In 1933, Jacksonville Beach became an incorporated city and soon became one of Florida's most popular tourist destinations.
