Jacksonville Beach's history dates back to 1892 when Jarrell Lipscomb founded Jacksonville Landing (later Jacksonville) as a wharf on what is now State Road 1A near today's downtown area. The landing served as a shipping point for goods moving up and down the rivers in Duval County, where it remained until 1906 when land began to be developed along both banks of the river. In 1912, an amusement park called Children's Park was built adjacent to present-day Evergreen Boulevard on what is now City Pier Drive. On October 15, 1916, Jacksonville Landing became part of Jacksonville when it was annexed by the city from Pinellas County. The development that followed during World War II brought about significant changes to Jacksonville Beach; most notably Naval Station Jacksonville became one of America's largest naval stations with over 2 million troops stationed there during World War II alone. The post-war years saw more development take place as well with commercial properties taking hold along much of downtown beforeqthepresentdaycityofJacksonvillewascreatedin1990fromthe merger of two other municipalities - Stonington and Neptune Heights - forming what is now known as "The Bluffs." The name "Jacksonville" comes from Captain John Jacobs's landing on Jacksonville Bay in 1565 and because of this, it has been often claimed as the birthplace of American democracy. The first settlement in what is now Jacksonville Beach was made by people who migrated from Nova Scotia in 1824. These early settlers were farmers and fishermen who took up land that had been donated to them by Governor Andrew Jackson. By 1830, there were 6 families living in what is now Jacksonville Beach. In 1857, a post office was established at the mouth of Key Largo Creek and soon after became known as "Jax." The first school was built on Commercial Street in 1872 and taught basic reading and writing skills to local children. In 1916, when Duval County was created from parts ofernando county, Jacksonville Beach became one of its seven townships. Today it remains an unincorporated community with a population size estimated at around 100 residents
