In 1840s Jacksonville's growth accelerated due to development around Fort Moultrie which was built by Rear Admiral James Wilkinson during the Seminole War to defend Pensacola Harbor against attack from Native Americans led by Tecumseh! The fort served as a depot for supplies and troops moving into and out of Cuba during this time period before being abandoned in 1865 following American victory there! As trade grew along the Gulf Coast shipping routes starting from Havana through Tampa Bay and Mobile Bay via Pensacola Landing#1 #2 #3 #4 #5#6 Jaxport seven miles upriver##7 local fishermen foundered their nets near what is now known as Point Whitehead’s Light House seeking access to fresh water which they thought lay at West Tomahawk River although today only about 6 feet deep lies beneath shoreline! Inland navigation improved greatly with purchase from Spain by US Navy Commodore Matthew Perry who renamed San Miguel de Allende Porto Rico after his father-in-law's birthplace in Spain some twenty kilometers south west of present day Ponce de Leon Springs! Commodore Perry sailed his squadron upriver pastPoint Whitehead’s Light House on November 7th, 1847 finally reaching land adjacent to present dayJacksonville on January 12th, 1848 having sailed downriver about 190 miles!!! After coastal surveys were made determine that inland waters lay nearby he authorized construction of Presidio Heights located between Green Street & Park Avenue serving primarily military personnel barracks until 1906 when installation became home for first grade school district!! Today we enjoy lovely Presidio Heights park complete with gardens picnic areas playgrounds (& much else!), beach frontwalk & views onto Intracoastal Waterway !!! USS Constitution Museum open daily 9am - 4pm $5 adults; $3 seniors 65+, students 13 & younger free; $2 children 3 - 11 free; Admission includes admission to USS Constitution Museum Asportation services arrived early in downtown area becoming known as “Jaxport” because vessels anchored there for dry dock repairs or repairs for other vessels docking alongside especially at East Live Oaks Lock leading northward toward NAS Miramar across Caloosahatchee River! This lock operated from 1870 until 1913 when it was replaced by new East Live Oaks Lock& Dam creating within vicinity Dockyards section now bounded by Live Oak Boulevard SW., Old Marlin Road NW., First Street NE., Naval Station Blvd./US 1W., plus parts of Indian Harbour Shores west side !!! During WWI USS Nashville stationed here protected approaches off mouth Gulf Of Mexico !! After WWII jaxport resumed commercial activities evolving into modern days Cross Keys Marina/Portugal Wharf which fronts Intracoastal Waterway !!!! Sailors currently calling at jaxport include US Coast Guard Cutter Chicago (CG 59), USCGC Miami (CG 58), USCGC San Francisco (CGN 127) One interesting aspect related to maritime history is jaxports role in building Panama Canal prior to 1898 thru purchase from Colombia$10 million dollars ransom paid + promise not To interfere w Cuban forces invading country!!! Nowadays many cruise ships stop here enroute between TampaBay/St PetersburgAnd Puerto VallartaPuerto Escondido CALIFORNIA etcetera

The first Europeans to visit Jacksonville Beach were the Spanish in 1565. The area was designated as a naval airbase by Florida Governor Manuel L. Key in 1927 and became a popular tourist spot for retirees and vacationers. The city of Jacksonville, which is now part of Jacksonville Beach, was founded in 1875 by J.D. Gaines, who developed the town on his sugar farm north of the beach. By 1900, Jacksonville had become one of America's most important seaports with its busy trade routes connecting Europe with Asia and the United States. In World War II, Jacksonville played an important role as a military base during the war effort with its large population of sailors and soldiers. After the war, many businesses moved to Jacksonville from downtown Miami including Sears Roebuck and Kressner Rubber Company which built their warehouses on Commercial Street near today's Maritime Museum. In 1990, after more than 50 years in business, Kressner Rubber Company closed its doors citing economic factors outside of their control; however, it remains one of history's longest continuously operating businesses in Jacksonville Beach at this time! In recent years, Jaguars have taken up residence along Flagler Boulevard just east of downtownJacksonvilleBeach as well as throughout much of DowntownJacksonvilleBeach - creating a new nightlife district that is quickly becoming known for its delicious seafood options (eagerly awaited by locals) as well as world-renowned concerts/events taking place at Stewart Stadium (formerly known as BankAtlantic Center).
