Jacksonville Beach is part of the Jacksonville–Boca Raton metropolitan area and is the only incorporated municipality within that area. The first humans to live in Jacksonville beach were men-of-war captains who used it as a whaling ground during Spanish period. A wharf was built at Jacksonville beach in 1827 by Captain William Teague and named after General Andrew Jackson who had been killed earlier that year while leading an army against Mexico City. In 1845, local residents voted to incorporate as a town under the name of "Jax" or "Beachside." On December 3rd, 1855, Jax voters passed a resolution annexing neighboring Tallahassee into Jax with no vote given on whether or not to do so because they felt it would be more efficient for them to have one consolidated municipality. In 1892/93 post office construction began proximate downtown which soon overlapped with present day First Coast Line Railroad tracks running along what is now Starkey Boulevard east of Signal Hill Road across from Naval Air Station Northrop Grumman's Ponce de Leon Airport property just north of Old Port Street intersection (now Waterfront Drive). The new post office - built by early Jacksonville builders David Kempton and Samuel Merrill - opened its doors on September 9th 1893 with mail brought in barge from Pensacola via Mobile Bay Seasons Harbor then conveyed overland by stagecoach service until arriving at Post Office Square which became known as 'Jacksonville'. The primary transportation link between eastern Duval County and western Nassau County was steamboats running upriver from Monroe Sound through Flagler Harbour followed by wagons crossing Mobile Bay Bridge amidships where horses were used for pulling carts loaded with coal downriver until reaching Kingston Landing on St Johns River where passengers disembarked for barges waiting offshore to take them back upriver again before disembarking at Punta Gorda for shipment finally reaching Wilmington or New Smyrna Beach
The Jacksonville Beach area was first settled by the Island of Florida in the late 1700s. The area became a part of the United States in 1813 when it was acquired by Spain as part of the Treaty of Paris following the Battle of Buena Vista. The city of Jacksonville was founded on what is now Northside Drive in 1907, and quickly became one of Florida's largest cities. The city prospered due to its location at an important natural harbor and its status as a leading producer of seafood. In 1970, Jacksonville merged with Duval County to form Jacksonville-Duval County government. In 1984, Jacksonville lost its state charter and became a city under Mayor Lenny Curry's leadership. He continued to lead the city until his resignation in 2006. During his tenure, Jacksonville made significant strides in improving infrastructure, including constructing two new waterfront parks and expanding bike lanes and pedestrian crossings throughout the city center. In 2013, Curry received praise from then-President Barack Obama for his work on revitalizing downtown Jacksonville during his time as mayor
