From this early beginning Jacksonville Beach played an important role not only as a port but also as a center for cultural activities including religious services, political rallies, balls and concerts and balls given by wealthy merchants from East Florida to provide entertainment for their guests along with fishing tournaments and skating parties - all events taking place at Government Dock Road just east of FtMoultrie Point light house (now known as Atlantic Avenue). During World War II more than 100 ships called at Jacksonville Beach Naval Base while repairing or supplying American forces engaged overseas; during peacetime thousands of visitors undocked from USS "Alabama" at Jacksons Marina came ashore here each week for shopping trips downtown or visits to local art galleries before sailing back out into open water again Sunday morning after spending Wednesday night inside«Old Fort Moultrie»on Government Dock Rd., now known as Battery Park Blvd., where they enjoyed refreshments served daily by marines stationed here until Saturday evening when they finally left aboard USS «Alabama» late Friday night after making stops off Key West Tuesday night & Nassau Wednesday morning before arriving here safely Saturday afternoon Monday morning - quite an event!
