The first recorded European settler was Nicholas de Soto, who landed on St Johns Island in 1565 AD with his army ofernando de la Roca y Meneses and explored much of today's Duval County before returning home to MexicoCity that year. Spanish traders soon followed de Soto to this location and began trading with Indian nations hereabouts as well as land west of Cape Canaveral on Cuba's Yucatan Peninsula which they captured from the Maya peoples about 1492 AD when Hernán Cortés arrived here following his expedition against Diego Velázquez masterminded by Spain's King Philip II seeking revenge for having been forced out of Mexico by Cortés' forces two years earlier while under Spain's command. Jacksonville Beach was first settled by the Tequestas in the early 1500s. The following year, they built a fort on the beach to protect their land from pirates. In 1663, the English took over Jacksonville and moved the fort to Fort Caroline. The English renamed it Jacksonville after Lord John Harrison, who had helped them victory at Worcester against Admiral James Cook's British fleet. The town grew rapidly until 1836 when a fire destroyed most of the business district. Afterward, Jacksonville became a popular resort for Americans and Europeans alike. It experienced rapid growth during World War II as Daytona Beach became an important military base. After the war ended, Jacksonville reverted back to its pre-war status as a sleepy fishing village with few businesses.
