The Jacksonville Beach pistol and shotgun club first met in 1884. It’s believed that the pistols were brought over by friends of the club, and that shotguns were not added until 1886. The club continued meeting regularly until 1911 when it disbanded because of lack of officers. The pistols and shotguns still exist today at the museum within the Jacksonville Beach Historical Society. In 1892, a group of businessmen from Stonington, Connecticut pooled their money to form the Jacksonville Gun Club. They wanted to provide a safe place for people in Jacksonville Beach to shoot firearms. The gun club meetings took place at different locations until 1907 when they moved to the old Masonic Lodge on Mackey Avenue. There, they continued meeting until 1912 when they disbanded again because there was no one left to lead them. The first gun owner in Jacksonville Beach was Samuel Biddle who bought a shotgun from James Ross in 1895. He continued shooting handguns until 1898 when he became an armorer for JGCC member John Pugh at his store on First Street near Mackey Avenue (now known as Second Street). From 1899-1902, Biddle served as secretary of JGCC and is considered the first president of JBGCC (Jax beach general society). In 1902, he married Lillie Wirtz and together they operated a grocery store on Fourth Street north of Mackey Avenue (now known as Third Street). They also kept an Armory on Fourth Street which served as storage space for weapons before meetings could be held there. Dennis Hickey purchased a revolver from Biddle in 1906 and continues to own it today along with several other guns dating back to 1903 including a rifle donated by Commodore John Farragut Jr.. In 1909-1910 Hickey was an officer with JGCC and is documented owning three revolvers including one that he donated to organization in 1914 after giving up his commission as captain USNR during World War I The next president of JBGCC was Willis Dormer who served from 1912-1914 Dormer had been born in Baltimore MD but raised in Florida where he attended high school before moving westward into politics where he started out working for Governor Thomas Edison before becoming state senator from Fort Myers FL then Speaker pro tempore then Lt Gov later serving two terms under Franklin D Roosevelt while FDR was President

In 1952 Jacksonville Beaches purchased its present-day site from South Miami Dade County through eminent domain; at that time it was one mile wide by two miles long with less than 1 percent of its current population living within its boundaries due to development restrictions placed upon it by then-County Manager Johnnie Ingrams." In 1966 city officials decided that downtown Jacksonville should become an open-air shopping center anchored by two big department stores: Sears Roebuck & Co., which had opened nearby in 1961, followed soon after by JCPenney Co., which built department store Plaza de las Americas on Third Avenue across from City Hall in 1967." Downtown commercial redevelopment continued until 1978 when developer Marvin Weinreb developed One Jackson Place into one of Jacksonville's tallest buildings; following development there was significant loss of jobs associated with federal government consolidation over southern Florida during the early 1980s."
