The first permanent European settlement in Jacksonville Beach was a group of French Huguenots who arrived in 1795. They built a small cabin on the bluff overlooking the beach and named their settlement Bayonne. In 1824, British troops burned down the original cabin, but construction continued and by 1830, Bayonne had a smallpox vaccine plant and dispensary. The town developed rapidly during the early 19th century as merchants and farmers moved into the area to provide goods for local markets. In 1835, Jacksonville Beach became an incorporated city under state law. The population of Jacksonville Beach quickly grew and by 1840 it had reached 100 residents. By 1870, Bayonne had become a thriving commercial center with several thousand inhabitants. The town experienced some declines during the American Civil War (1865-1871), but recovered quickly after that period. During Reconstruction (1875-1877), Bayonne underwent an extensive rebuilding process which included new streets, buildings, churches, schools and other infrastructure. In 1916 Jacksonville Beach was acquired by Florida from its former Spanish landowner; it remains an unincorporated community today.
