After landing here he explored what is now Flagler County and named it Santiago de Cuba after his hometown of Santiago, Puerto Rico. In 1795, Spanish explorer Manuel Lightfoot discovered Santa Fe Bay on Jupiter's east coast which led him discoveries including Tampa Bay in 1824 and St Petersburg in 1830 which became known as "the most beautiful harbor on Earth." In 1830s Englishman John Thornton established Thornton’s Landing at PtSlavery Key on St Petersburg’s west shore where he bought slaves then traded them across the Gulf Stream to New Orleans where they were sold into slavery under conditions such as hard labor or being worked seven days a week without rest or food. On November 1st 1840 John Thornton allowed himself free passage from America with his slave Lucy Ann Beattie walking hand-in-hand with her young son George at PtSlavery Key before sailing away downriver into Mexican waters accompanied by their dog Sambo underwing until they reached San Francisco about two weeks later! This event symbolized abolitionism across the ocean! On February 14th 1861, during Confederate General Robert E Lee's invasion of Fort Sumter in Charleston Harbor (now Savannah), four Union soldiers died after being shot through an opening in one of Lee's cannons which caused heavy casualties among Confederate forces; this event helped start America’s Civil War! Colonel Robert E Lee had initially planned for only three hours' bombardment but found himself attacking for eight hours straight!
