In 1959, when Homestead was added to Florida's Okeechobee County, it became one of only two counties with no white residents as part of a " diverse " system that helped achieve racial diversity across all levels of government through open elections and Zoning Districts laws . By 1972, however , white residents had begun moving back into Homestead while black residents continued to reside in adjacent towns such as West Palm Beach and Fort Pierce . In recent years there has been strong activism led by some citizens to try and retain or update historic landmarks within the boundaries of their town while also creating new businesses which have helped stimulate economic development within its limits
The Homestead-Ft. Walton area was first settled in 1867 when the United States government granted land to a group of pioneers who named themselves the "Ft. Walton Pioneers." The original settlers were white men and women from England, Scotland, Wales, and Ireland. They built their homes on property that is now known as Ft. Walton Beach. In 1902, the US government changed its name to Homestead-Ft. Walton Area Park in honor of these early settlers and their descendants.
