Homestead, Florida is a small town located in Hillsborough County, Florida. The population was 4,912 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Hillsborough County and the home to the Miami-Dade County Courthouse and many other government buildings. The community began as a small farming village in 1871 and quickly became an agricultural center for southern Hillsborough County. In 1927, homesteaders who had been given free land near Fort Myers founded a new town on what is now Homestead's east side known as "The Lakes". Until 1924, Hillsborough County was part of Miami-Dade County. On January 1, 1925, Miami-Dade merged with Broward County to form the newly created Miami-Hollywood area which included all of Broward and Palm Beach Counties as well as most of Hardeeville and Lake Worth Park. As part of this merger, Homestead became part ofMiami-Hollywood but retained its name for residents living within its limits only. In 1940, when Hollywood was hit by World War II shortages of foodstuffs and materiel due to allied bombing raids that destroyed businesses throughout Southern California (the war being called "The Great Depression"), local farmers began marketing their produce through major distribution networks in Tampa Bay and Jacksonville. One result was that prices for food items sold in Homestead decreased significantly while quality increased because there were no large retailers or distributors competing against local farmers who could offer better prices and higher quality products direct to consumers

The first settlers in Homestead, Florida were the Seminoles. The Seminoles were a Native American tribe that lived in present-day Florida and parts of Alabama. They left Florida to find new land because they believed the area was cursed. The second group of settlers were white men who bought land in what is now Homestead, Florida from the Seminoles. The first settler named George Washington bought 5 acres of land on July 4, 1821. He used it as his home and farm until he died in 1825. Other early settlers included Captain John Smith who purchased 3 acres of land on February 14, 1824. He named it “Smith’s Town” after himself and his family members. The town was abandoned after he sold it to a man named Wm. Hickey on October 9, 1830. Hickey renamed the town “Homestead” after himself and donated all the land within it to the government for development into a township (township). On January 1, 1903, the name “Homestead” was changed to “Milton” by Act NoL 90-2 which received royal assent on February 8th, 1890 pursuant to Section 2 of Article XIII of the Constitution of this State (Statutes at Large)). In 1893 Milton became part of Lake County which had been created from parts of Broward County and Palm Beach County ( Statutes at Large p 21). On January 1st 1923 Milton became part of Stonington County which had also been created from parts of Broward County and Palm Beach County ( Statutes at Large p 27).
Homestead, Florida was founded in 1868 by John S. Polk and his wife Anna. The town was named for homesteads that had been granted to early settlers in the area. In 1892, Homestead became a county seat and it has remained that way ever since.
