Homestead, Florida is a small town in Polk County, Florida. It is located on the Gulf of Mexico about thirty-six miles east of Fort Myers and twenty-seven miles west of Naples. The population was 1,564 at the 2010 census. The first settlers in Homestead were John Denton and his family who arrived in 1837. They built a log cabin on the banks of the river which they named "Denton's Bluff." In 1848, James Fenton and his family settled here and founded the town. The first schools were established in Homestead by Drury Copley in 1854. The first post office was opened in 1865. In 1898, General Leonard Wood visited Homestead and recommended that it be annexed to Fort Myers so that its citizens could have access to education and other benefits enjoyed by residents of larger cities. On May 11, 1898, a vote was taken to annex Homestead to Fort Myers with a result that it became an official city! Today there are over fifty businesses operating within the boundaries of Homestead including several medical practices as well as Burger King (formerly White Castle), Pizza Hut (formerly Domino's), Dairy Queen ( formerly KFC), Busch Gardens Theme Park, ToysRus., Lowe's Home Improvement Company and more! The town was named for Houston, who had bought the land in 1845. By 1870, Homestead had become an important trading center for the surrounding area. The town faced several challenges during its early years. For one, it was located on high ground surrounded by hostile Apache Native Americans who often raided neighboring villages. In addition, an abundance of natural resources made life difficult for settlers: There was plenty of timber but no water or minerals available to make goods or build homes. However, through hard work and determination, Homestead slowly grew into a thriving community with its own schools, church services, businesses and families. Today, Homestead is known as one of the most successful small towns in Florida history – thanks in part to its strong sense of community spirit which has kept things alive since it first emerged as a settlement
The Homestead Project was a series of land grants from the United States government to American colonists in the Florida Panhandle in 1835. The project aimed to provide white settlers with homesteads on confiscated Indian land, and it was one of the largest public programs in American history.
