In 1836, James Eads and his brother-in-law Christopher Gist established a farm on what is now Known as Old Key Street. The Gists were pioneers in land ownership and development in Florida. They laid out a rough township called Key West on their property and named it after them. In 1841, Benjamin Fenton homesteaded land south of present day US 192 on what is now known as Maple Avenue. He named his property “Homestead” after home he had built on his family’s original slave plantation in Georgia. Fenton was an American Civil War veteran who fought for Confederate States of America during the war. After the war ended, he returned to Florida and started a business exporting goods from Jacksonville, Alabama to Key West. On July 22nd 1865, Major General Ulysses S. Grant arrived at Key West for the Union Forces victory over Confederate forces at Second Battle of Bull Run which marked the end of the American Civil War in Virginia and North Carolina. This event is considered one of America’s greatest days ever because it ushered in Reconstruction which lasted until 1919 when white supremacists regained control over Southern states following World War II

Homestead is a small town located in Monroe County, Florida, United States. The population was 1,895 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Jacksonville Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first settler in Homestead was John Sutherlin in 1837. He built a cabin on what is now State Road 555 about two miles northeast of present day Homestead. A post office called Sutherlin was established in 1839, and remained in operation until 1881. The town began to develop around the realization that it would be an ideal place to farm because of its fertile soil and lack of development nearby. In 1860, James Ritchie built a sawmill on what is now US-1 south of the town limits. By 1865, there were three stores and seventy-five homes in Homestead; by 1870, there were six stores and one hundred homes. In 1895, Jno Witherspoon purchased 800 acres (30 km²) east of present day Homestead for $2 million dollars; he named it Myrtle Beach after his daughter who had leukemia at the time (later renamed Miracle Children Memorial Hospital). Witherspoon planned to build a resort here but never did so due to financial difficulties; however, he left behind some impressive architecture including an original white clocktower that still stands today as part of the main building at Myrtle Beach International Airport. In 1926–27 The Miami Herald published an article about how "the greatest thing happening to County [Monroe] since annexation by Miami" was the growth of Homestead and neighboring towns such as Marathon which "have become models for self-reliance". This article has been cited as evidence that people from Jacksonville started moving into Monroe County because they thought it would be more developed than areas like Monroe City or Pompano Beach which they considered less attractive due to their lack of infrastructure and services available outside those areas). In 1907–08 when construction began on new roads within Monroe County (later State Road 498), many businesses closed up shop because no other transportation options existed other than walking or driving long distances each way! This made for an interesting competition among businesses to see who could provide the most service with lowest prices - something that continues today with internet access and cell phone service available everywhere! When Interstate 95 was completed through Monroe County in 1964 (!), all these businesses finally had easy access to jobs and education down south - thank you I-95!

After the war, Homestead declined significantly as a commercial center due to population decline and suburbanization. However, since 2000 it has seen sporadic revitalization through downtown business districts, new housing developments, and tourism initiatives.
The Homestead was founded in 1845 by Colonel James Wilkinson, a U.S. Army officer who had retired from the army and become a cattle farmer. The land for the town was donated by Wilkinson's wife, Sarah Lewis. The first Post Office was established in 1846, and the first store opened in 1850. In 1863, Homestead became part of Polk County. In 1885, the county seat moved to Lake City after being moved from nearby Winter Haven.
