Homestead, Florida is a town located in Polk County, Florida, United States. The population was 1,826 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Jacksonville–Bainbridge Beach metropolitan area. The first Europeans to visit Homestead were Spanish explorers mapping the Gulf Coast region in 1565. They named it "San Sebastian" after the then-vacation spot on peninsular Spain where their ship had been stranded for repairs weeks earlier. In 1835, homesteaders built a community (later renamed Miami) on Roman Catholic land west of present day Homestead in what is now known as Coral Gables. In 1845, Miami became part of Polk County and Canaveral National Seashore was established within its boundaries. The first post office in Miami was established at San Miguel de Allende on October 25, 1846; it moved to Homestead on December 12th of that year because postal service between those two points was not available then or until after the American Civil War began). On January 5th 1880 another post office called "Miami" opened at what is now Highland Park with mail being sent from Key Biscayne and West Palm Beach . On February 26th 1896 an act passed by Congress designated all of Indian River County including Homestead as part of Fort Pierce Harbor . The first real communities were established in 1881 when Jacksonville and St. Augustine joined Polk County. One of the most famous homesteaders in Florida was John Wesley Powell, who claimed 1,500 acres (680 hectares) of land near Gainesville in 1886. Powell's home and mill remain standing today within walking distance of his historic ranch house which he built himself between 1885 and 1889. Other notable homesteaders include James Fenton, who located a farmstead on Santa Rosa Island in 1903; Wernher von Braun and his family who settled on Big Pine Key after fleeing Nazi Germany; as well as several members of the Kennedy family such as Jack Kennedy’s father Joseph Pappano and brother-in-law Robert Kennedy Sr.. Eventually, many people moved away from Homestead due to various reasons such as economic opportunities or changes in technology. However, some legacy buildings still stand around town including the author’s childhood home at 704 NW 2nd Street which overlooks Lake Okeechobee; Joe Biden’s childhood home at 901 NE 3rd Street where he grew up; Methodist church – founded by Methodists – which still meets here every Sunday morning for worship; and old courthouse - also founded by Methodists – that still stands today adjacent to City Hall. Today, much has changed since those early days when life was based largely upon farming, hunting and fishing rather than using electricity or automobiles for transportation
1880: Homestead was founded on a tract of land that is now part of Jacksonville, Florida. The first white person to live in the area was James Moseley, who bought the land in 1881. 1915: The United States Supreme Court ruled in favor of Homesteaders in a case known as White v. Hendry, which allowed homesteaders to keep their land without paying taxes. This decision helped spur development around Homestead and Jacksonville. 1920: The U.S. government leased the land from Hendry for 99 years and began developing it into parcels that are now known as communities such as Sunrise Valley, Clearwater Beach, and Port-au-Prince Lakeside Estates. 1980: Jacksonville's Centennial Celebration marked the beginning of a new era for the city when it became an official city within the state of Florida. On October 1, 1980, Jacksonville became one of just six cities statewide to receive recognition from then-Governor Lawton Chiles with his proclamation calling Jacksonville "the most outstanding community in all of Florida."
