Homestead, Florida is a small town located in Panhandle County, Florida. The population was 2,893 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Pensacola, Florida metropolitan area. The town was platted in 1907 by Colonel John C. Butler and General W. H. Ladd as a bedroom community for panhandlers who would come to Floridas panhandle on horseback during the summertime to buy goods that were unavailable in Jacksonville or Tampa Bay. The name "Homestead" came from the Spanish word "hombre," meaning someone who has land and lives on it, which may have been why so few people live there today since most of its residents bought their homes in other towns and cities after World War II when Homestead became a military base and then a commercial center known for defense industries such as Lockheed Martin Company (now Lockheed Martin Space Co.) Today's economy is primarily based on government employment including those at NASA Goddard Space Flight Center (where Mir is built), US Army Corps of Engineers (which manages navigational beacons along Highway 10) as well as many small businesses providing services such as plumbing, janitorial work, carpentry, landscaping and agricultural production. In 1846, the United States acquired land in what is now Florida from Spain. The area was known as the Spanish Fort Territory and it was part of the Mexican territory that was ceded to the United States in 1848. In 1884, Congress passed a bill creating a Territorial Legislature for the Territory of Florida and this legislature authorized President Grover Cleveland to create a homestead law in order to encourage American settlers to come to Florida. The first homesteaders were brought over by boat from Georgia on November 1,1886. The first claim was filed with the USF&G Land Office on December 3, 1886 by Wm H. Hardin and his son-in-law Jno Ayer. On January 7, 1889, territorial Judge John Bunning approved Hardin’s claim as well as Ayer’s. Under Ulysses S. Grant’s administration (1869-77), much progress had been made in developing Florida under his watch including repealing rules that discouraged settlement of new lands by Americans. However, he also enacted harsh anti-immigrant measures which led to many farmers leaving their homes in search of Opportunity in an opening country where land could be sold at a fraction of its true value due to lack of regulation or policy guidance from Washington D.C.. This sudden influx of people who were not accustomed to living near water caused problems such as floods and erosion which stripped away valuable acreage along rivers and streams while promoting settlement adjacent thereto by those who had no choice but to take advantage of available land because it was free from restrictions placed upon them by other citizens or government officials within their own borders….. As early as 1892 there were more than 2,000 residents registered with USF&G; although only about one hundred were actually living on their claims………. Many claimants simply abandoned their holdings after becoming aware that they would not be able to sell them at least until state action became available against persons responsible for flooding or other abuses………. By 1903 there still existed about one third of all claims unoccupied………………………………….. New entrants into this rapidly growing industry included menaced settlers who had fled troubles back east during the Panic years (the phase between 1893–1901) when prices for food and other necessities soared far above costsprevailing before then………………………………… It should be noted that most early homesteaders did not develop large plantations; rather they focused on raising livestock and growing crops
In 1837, the first permanent settlers in Homestead were James and Sarah Goode. The Goodes were the first to build a cabin on the property; it was completed in 1838. In 1840, Daniel Boone arrived in present-day Florida and explored the area forays that led to his claim to what is now Polk County. In 1846, homesteaders John Fenton and Andrew White built a sawmill on what is now US-1 nearpresent day Sarasota. It was one of many mills built along this stretch of US 1 in early Florida during the late 1800s as railroad construction brought more people and goods into the region. By 1860, there were over 100 businesses operating along US 1 in present day Polk County. On July 4, 1861, Confederate General Robert Ewell's army invaded Florida from Georgia under General Ulysses S. Grant and attacked Homestead at Fort Pickens while Union forces blockaded Jacksonville Harbor. The attack resulted in much destruction with over 150 killed including 22 of Homestead's own citizens James Goode and Sarah Goode (granddaughter of James). Aftermath: A black man named George Washington Weatherly was elected as mayor of Jacksonville after this attack until his resignation due to impeachment charges against him by Governor Don Carlos Broughton
