In 1886, General William Tecumseh Sherman visited Hollywood during his campaign against Mexico and decided that it should be renamed Shermanville after him instead of La Hacienda de las Palmas because he thought it would be more soon becoming a town instead of just another cattle ranch. However, Sherman never got around to it and the name stuck with the community until 1920 when it was officially renamed Hollywood after movie producer Darryl Zanuck.
Hollywood, Florida was founded in 1925 by Hollywood movie producer Harry Cohn and actor/director Cecil B. DeMille. The community developed quickly due to its location on the Mediterranean Sea and its proximity to several major movie studios. In 1933, Cohn sold Hollywood, Florida to oil tycoon Roy Gorman for $2 million. Gorman used the profits to build what is now known as the Hollywood Bowl.
