BB guns were first introduced to Hollywood in the early 1920s. At that time, most people in Hollywood owned shotguns and handguns. However, there was a small group of individuals who enjoyed using BB guns for target shooting. These individuals were often called “the BB shooters” or “gun nuts.” In the early 1920s, many movie studios had their own ranges where they could shoot weapons prototypes and test new scripts. One of these ranges was located at the home of Paramount Pictures president Harry Cohn. The gun range was used by both studio executives and production staff to shoot pistols, shotguns, rifles and even grenades. In 1923, movie producer Hal Roach hired an Italian engineer named Giovanni Savini to design a BB gun that would be able to kill small animals like rabbits and squirrels without injuring them. Savini’s BB gun eventually became known as the Rascal carbine (pictured). The Rascal carbine quickly became popular among movie producers and crew members because it was easy to use and very accurate. It also had a low recoil which made it perfect for shooting at close range. In 1924, Savini produced his own version of the Rascal carbine called the Pistolero (pictured). This Rifle-style BB gun had a barrel length of only 36 inches and weighed only 2 pounds! It was also very easy to operate – just cock the weapon by pulling back on the stock ! BB guns continued to be popular among movie producers throughout the 1930s – even though they were now being used more for target shooting than for taking down animals!
