The Hollywood, Florida area was first settled in the early 1800s. The first European to see the area was a Spanish sailor who landed on what is now called Hollywood Beach in 1819. He named the spot after his homeland—Puerto Rico. A few years later, a group of Englishman built a cabin on what is now known as Vine Street and started selling goods from their ship, the Lioness, which docked at Hollywood Pier. In 1827, George Rogers Clark passed through Hollywood on his way to reach Tampa Bay and named it after himself, since he had never seen anything like it before. By 1830, there were over 20 businesses in the area and it consisted of only a handful of homes. However, by 1835 movie theaters had come into being and by 1840 there were more than 30 cinemas in operation throughout Florida. By 1865, Hollywood had become an important center for entertainment with many films being shot here including Alexander Woollcott’s “The Picture of Dorian Gray” and Edwin Saperstein’s “Der Freischütz”
